SHOO, Pests! Fire Ant Remedy?

To get rid of fire ants, a reader of Backyard Living suggests filling a foil pie plate with water and sprinkling the ground around it with cornmeal.  Fire ants love cornmeal, but it makes them thirsty.  The water makes the cornmeal expand in their abdomens, killing them.

Cut grass to no less than 3 inches high.
Don't fertilize during summer.
Aerate soil at least every two years.
Check underground irrigation systems weekly.
Don't try to keep grass dark green in summer.
Watering deeply once every five days is good for your lawn, good for your pocketbook, and helps preserve a precious resource.
